About Microsoft Tablets
Microsoft Corporation, which is a software major based in Redmond, Washington, recently began to exploit into the computer hardware territory. It has released tablets under the banner of Surface, and has recently taken over Nokia’s mobile business, rebranding as Microsoft Mobile.
History of Microsoft Tablets
Microsoft’s entry into the tablet space happened with the release of the Surface tablet in 2012. Also, this marked Microsoft’s entry into the computer hardware industry as it had been completely designed and marketed by the software giants. The Surface Pro, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 followed within the next year.
2014 saw the release of the Surface Pro 3 which was succeeded by the Surface 3 a year hence. The latest in the series are the Surface Pro 4 and Book (hybrid laptop).
Popularity in India
Microsoft’s popularity in India, and perhaps even the world, is mainly because of its Windows OS. Also, with the acquisition of Nokia, the company has gained a stronger foothold in the market, mainly due to its popular Lumia phones.
However, the Surface brand of tablets is yet to make their presence felt in the country. This is primarily due to lack of availability and pricing. While the company initially sold these tablets through the Windows Store, it wasn’t applicable to India. The only places to find them are some online retailers like eBay and Amazon. Also, the second factor that kicks in is the high price. Even the lowest model (without the type cover) comes at a price that is beyond the reach of most Indian customers.
Design of Microsoft Tablets
Microsoft’s tablets have been credited to have some of the best designs in the industry so far. These tablets typically boast of a magnesium alloy construction and are very light, roughly up to 900 grams at most. They also have a matte finish and that makes it easier to hold them. The tablets do have a kick-type stand that can support viewing at a number of different angles. Further, one can pay extra to get a type cover, to which the screen can be attached.
For the screen, the size ranges between 10.8 and 12.3 inches with ClearType/Pixel Sense technology. The resolution is largely HD/FHD and thus offers great quality for viewing. Screens also have Gorilla Glass protection.
A large number of colors are available for these tablets, and most of them are trendy and attractive.
Features of Microsoft Tablets
Microsoft’s tablets are fully designed, keeping in mind with modern features that people look for in tablets. They are powered by some of the best processors available in the market from the likes of Intel and Nvidia. For memory, there are options available up to 16GB. Storage too doesn’t lag behind and it is mostly in the form of SSDs and goes upwards from 64GB up to 1TB. The tablets rely mostly on inbuilt GPUs, but also provide the option of adding Nvidia units during the time of purchase.
The company’s Surface and Surface 2 tablets are known to run Windows RT versions while the other releases run the regular Windows versions. One can also choose to run tablet/desktop mode, as per their choice. Also, all of these tablets have been updated to the very latest Windows 10.
For connectivity, the Microsoft tablets offer a whole range of options. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth make up the wireless section. A number of ports, such as USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, audio jack, cover and magnetic charging/docking port are provided for additional connectivity options. The tablets also feature rear and front cameras, along with stereo speakers and basic sensors.
A number of accessories can be added to increase functionalities of a Microsoft tablet, such as Type Cover, Surface Pen and wireless display adapters.
