Celkon tablets became quite popular in India since they started importing Chinese phones in the country. Their subsequent expansion and setting up of a manufacturing unit in Hyderabad gave them the opportunity to capitalise on that popularity. Today, the company provides tablets and phones with high specifications in the mid-range bracket.

Celkon is a popular technology brand in India specialising in mobiles and tablets. The company has made quite a name for itself over the last few years in the mid-range segment.

Under their dynamic Chairman, Y Guru, Celkon tablets are beginning to take control of what at present is a niche market.

Celkon beginnings

Founded in 2009, the company began as an entity importing China-made phones to India. Eyeing the potential for local manufacture, Celkon had its first manufacturing unit opened at the outskirts of Hyderabad in 2015.

The plant opened right in the aftermath of the creation of the Indian state of Telegana. The prospect of providing employment and services to hundreds of people saw them receive considerable help from the state government.

Celkon became the first tablet manufacturing company in South India. The Hyderabad plant had 4 production lines with the capacity of producing 5 lakh units every month. The growth of the company came at a time when India was starting to become the largest consumer base for mobile phones and tablets.

Celkon tablets in Indian markets

Celkon has become the 5th biggest Mobile and Tablet Company in India in terms of revenue and are looking to further shorten the gap to the top. Their estimated revenue stands at an impressive 2000 crores.

The Diamond 4G Tabs 7 & 8, 820 tablet and CT-9 are the four best-selling Celkon tablets at present. All of these models have a pricing axis that falls in the sub-12,000 category.

The tablets by Celkon were already popular in India before the opening of their manufacturing plant in Hyderabad. Years of business in importing Chinese tablets gave them the opportunity to first penetrate the Indian market before starting to produce locally.

The brand of Celkon

Celkon's core strategy in India is to provide tablets that are high on specifications and low on the pocket pinch. Manufacturing these products in India instead of China allows them to significantly cut costs on import and foreign labour.

The USP of Celkon tablets is that they offer significantly higher specifications in comparison to rivals in the same price bracket.

Celkon also roped in Virat Kohli and popular actors down south, Tamannaah and Yash to be their brand ambassador. The company also acts as series sponsors for various cricketing tournaments. All of these publicity drives make Celkon a household name and furthers their brand both nationally and globally.

Prospects for the future

Estimates predict for the Indian tablet and mobile industry to further grow in the next several years. A lot of Indians especially in rural and semi-urban India prefer portable technologies like tablets to laptops or desktop systems.

According to reports, Celkon is now in talks with Telcos in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for various joint ventures. Projects such as these will enable them to further expand across Asia.

All of these factors withstanding, the future for Celkon tablets looks immensely bright. Not only are they focussing on providing quality but also on pricing them in a manner so that the products sell well.
