About BlackBerry Tablets
BlackBerry Ltd., earlier known as Research In Motion, is a popular smartphone and telecommunications equipment manufacturer. Besides its range of exclusive smartphones, the company is also known for its tablet computers, which are called the BlackBerry PlayBook.
History of BlackBerry Tablets
The PlayBook was first released in April 2011 and was designed by BlackBerry itself. However, these tablets were manufactured by Quanta Computer. It ran the BlackBerry Tablet OS, which was later updated and integrated with the phone’s counterpart to form the BlackBerry 10.
A year later came the BlackBerry 4G LTE version. In between, there were some models discontinued and others released, mainly in terms of their storage capacities. The last tablet from the house of BlackBerry is the Secutablet and that was released in 2015.
Popularity in India
BlackBerry’s popularity and availability in India cannot be doubted. Given that a large section of business users have always preferred the use of BlackBerry devices for communication, it happens to be a crowd puller.
Just as its smartphones, the PlayBook devices are also very favorable among many users in the country. Many have largely preferred it as a good and premium offering, when compared to the cheaper Android tablets. Also, they are pretty cheaper when compared to the iPads. These tablets are largely available via retailers and ecommerce giants. Despite their late arrival in the country, they did fairly well.
Design of BlackBerry Tablets
BlackBerry is perhaps one of those companies, out of a few, which largely focuses on the design aspects of its products. While their smartphone models apparently offer rich design features, so do their tablets.
The PlayBook has a rectangular form factor and is pretty solid in its construction. Also, these devices are fairly lightweight and making them easy to be carried around. The screen is a 7 inch WSVGA LCD display and does produce a great output. There are onscreen buttons and no capacitive ones. Also, the branding appears at the back and front. The edges around these tablets are rounded and it also has a type of rubberized back to provide users with a better grip.
The color option for the PlayBook tablets is black.
Features of BlackBerry Tablets
BlackBerry’s PlayBook tablets are rich in features and in tandem with most modern tablets. They are equipped with OMAP processors from Texas Instruments and come along with 1GB of RAM. Also for storage, one has numerous options to pick from and they range between 16GB and 128GB.
The tablets run BlackBerry Tablet OS and it was later upgraded to BlackBerry 10. The UI is smooth and offers a great surfing experience. There is support for Android apps and they can be downloaded from the BlackBerry App World.
For connectivity, BlackBerry’s PlayBook devices again offer numerous means. For wireless options, the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity is available. For wired options too, one cannot go wrong with micro USB and micro HDMI. The 4G LTE version, as mentioned, provides cellular support and although it has NFC, it is disabled.
BlackBerry’s Secutablet is a great option to numerous people who are a little extra concerned when it comes to security and privacy. This tablet runs a more secure version of BlackBerry 10 operating system and also uses pretty much the same hardware as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.
There are numerous sensors present to assist with daily functioning and is powered by a Li-ion battery.
