Alcatel-Lucent is French telecom company that had been in existence after a merger of two companies Alcatel and Lucent Technologies in 2006. Both the companies were founded in the 1870s. In 2004, Alcatel had also partnered TCL Corporation of China for the manufacturing of mobile phones and tablets. As of 2016, TCL still manufactures mobiles and tablets under the Alcatel brand name, while Alcatel-Lucent has been acquired by Nokia.
History of Alcatel Tablets
Alcatel Mobile Phones was a joint venture between Alcatel-Lucent and TCL Communications, which was formed in 2004. However, in about a year of its formation Alcatel sold all of its shares to TCL, resulting in the latter gaining control over the company. Despite the fact that Alcatel has no stakes in the venture, products manufactured by the company still carry the branding.
The company, at present, manufactures tablets and mobiles phones. Its product lines are called One Touch Pop, Pixi or Evo.
Popularity in India
Alcatel had been present in the country for a long time, but mainly as a telecom equipment provider. Its mobile phone business wasn’t popular in the country until its latest Android releases. One of the key reasons why Alcatel has never has a decent market in India is due to its bad marketing policy. In fact, a large part of the people does not even know of the company’s name.
Even in the case of tablets, Alcatel’s releases are only available on popular e-commerce websites. There are also very few service centers available in the country, which can lead to hassles when servicing is needed. This adds to people’s reluctance to buy their tablets. Also, there is plenty of competition in the market and Alcatel really doesn’t fit in there.
Design of Alcatel Tablets
Alcatel’s devices largely have a polycarbonate body, with the bezels being made of metal. They have a rectangular form factor and are also very light in terms of weight. The branding is present in the center of the back cover and it has the name of the line of product. The Alcatel One Touch branding is present in the bottom portion.
The most common screen sizes for Alcatel’s devices are 7 or 8 inches. A few releases do have a 10 inch screen. The technology used screen construction is IPS LCD and many of them also have HD resolution for great viewing. In addition, Corning Gorilla Glass is provided with tablets for the screen’s protection.
Features of Alcatel Tablets
Alcatel tablets mostly come with MediaTek or Qualcomm Snapdragon processors that have quad-core processing power. To go with this, these devices are provided with 1GB of primary memory. The internal available flash storage varies between devices, although 8GB is the most commonly available one. This can also be expanded by means of a micro-SD card.
Most Alcatel tablets are known to run on Android OS versions. The devices come with the latest version at the time of release. In fact, the company’s latest tablet features Android Marshmallow. A few tablets have also been known to run Windows.
For connectivity, these tablets have plenty of options. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are obvious offerings. Cellular connectivity is another option that is available with most tablets, and they even have 3G/4G support. Besides these, there is micro-USB and a 3.5mm headphone jack provided for audio. Speakers are also present in these devices and so are sensors for various functionalities.
Alcatel tablets have Li-ion batteries that provide a promising usage backup.
