In 1963, Yamaha motorcycles began being manufacturing with 2-stroke engines. 2 years later a 305cc 2-stroke twin-engine the company's flagship, came about. And another 2 years later its upgrade- 350cc 2 stroke twin R1 (a new model with larger displacement) saw the tarmac. In 1968, the 1st if their 4 stroke came out , an XS-1 650cc 4 stroke twin-engine motorcyle.

It was around this time that Japanese manufacturer brought out the legendary CB-750 4-stroke 4-cylinder machine. Right through the 1970s and extending into the 1980s, this 4 stroke reign continued to bring along number less success and race triumphs. In the late 1990s, the introduction of 1000cc 4 cylinder motorbike YZF R1, brought about a new era of performance bikes with off-road abilities.
