Ducati Motorcycle Merges German Precision with Italian Design
Owning a Ducati is the ultimate dream of every biking enthusiast worldwide. A global leader of the sports-bike fraternity, Ducati is owned by Audi through its Italian subsidiary Lamborghini which falls under the ownership of the Volkswagen group. This allows a Ducati motorcycle to embrace German precision while having its roots in Italian design.
How Ducati Came To Be?
1926 saw Antonio Cavalieri Ducati launch this company with his 3 sons. Ducati at that time was a manufacturer of radio parts like condensers and vacuum tubes - a far cry from motorcycles.
In 10 years' time, the company was successful enough to have a new production unit in Borgo Panigale. However, following heavy bombing during Second World War, Ducati sought help from the Italian government to build a new factory from scratch and shift their focus on motorcycle production.
In 1946, Cucciolo - the first 50cc motor was put out. Customers had to attach their own bike to this engine. In due time, this 50cc engine grew to 60, 98, and then 125cc.
The 60s saw Ducati rise to fame as it produced the world's fastest 250cc bike, their iconic Mach 1. Thereafter, Ducati moved into producing large-displacement V-twin motorcycles in the 70s.
In 1996, Texas Pacific Group acquired majority shares in Ducati for a couple of years. They, however, decided to sell their shares to the Investindustrial Holdings. Finally, in 2012, Volkswagen took over the reins of the company through Audi.
Ducati's global reach
Ducati is a giant of a company with 700 dealers spreading over 90 countries. Their biggest presence is in Europe, followed by the US. This only goes to highlight the global demand for Ducati bikes.
India, on the other hand, comprises 9 Ducati dealerships spread across the length and breadth of the nation. One can find a Ducati motorcycle dealership store in any of the cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Siwan, Chhindwara, and Gurgaon.
Brand and Popularity
Apart from these characteristics, every Ducati motorcycle benefits from its rich and reputable lineage. Such is the brand of Ducati that it makes heads turn everywhere it goes.
The Ducati 899 Panigale topped year-end charts in 2014 as the highest selling bike, beating much cheaper rivals. In fact, it ranks among the 3 or 5 most popular bike manufacturers in pretty much every list.
What Makes A Ducati Motorcycle Stand Out?
Ducati is also planning to speed up growth in India and has plans of launching 6 new models that are in the pipeline. The company recently launched the 1299 Superleggera, making it the most expensive production motorcycle in India at INR 1.12 crores.
Well, purchasing a Ducati is like purchasing the best of German precision merged with Italian design. Really, who wouldn't be tempted?
