About Royal Enfield Motorcycle
Owning a Royal Enfield motorcycle holds a special pride of place in every Indian biker's heart. The company enjoys a cult following in India that recently saw it overtake global leaders Harley Davidson in popularity and sales. They are looking to build on that and advance their reach further.
The Royal Enfield Motorcycle – India's Very Own Bike:
The Royal Enfield motorcycle is among one of the most easily recognisable motorcycles in India. With its heavy duty build and ability to navigate difficult terrain, the Enfield bikes have found great popularity in India.
From army personnel to police officers to regular users, Enfield bikes find a variety of takers. The bikes are characterised by the typical rough sound of the engine and fully metal chassis.
The Enfield History:
Royal Enfield was initially a brand name for the Enfield Cycle Company of Worcestershire to sell motorcycles, lawnmowers, cycles and other stationary engines. The first bike from the Enfield stables came out in 1901.
In 1955, the Enfield Cycle Company partnered with Madras Motors from India to start the Indian subsidiary of the company. The first bike to go into production in Chennai was the classic 350cc bullet – the singular most popular Royal Enfield motorcycle.
The government of India at that time was looking for a suitable motorcycle to patrol the Indian roads and borders. Since then, the Royal Enfield bullet is a common sight not only on Indian roads but also near patrol borders.
Manufacturing plants and Dealerships:
The Royal Enfield has 3 manufacturing plants, all of which are in different parts of Chennai. The heavy floods of 2015 saw the company cut production by 4000 motorcycles in November of that year. However, the company recovered from the setback and got back into production in a month's time.
Royal Enfield motorcycle dealerships are spread across the country and available in every major city of India. In fact, the network of their dealerships is so vast that most metro cities have not one but multiple dealerships.
Popularity of the Royal Enfield:
Royal Enfield has something of a cult following in India. There is something about the all-metal solid build and the heavy engine sound of a Bullet that just endears itself to the hearts of Indians.
A Royal Enfield motorcycle is not only a bike but a symbol of a strength and resilience. In 2014, Royal Enfield overtook world leader Harley Davidson by selling over 300,000 units to Harley Davidson's 267,000. The popularity of Royal Enfield motorcycles clearly therefore is not just local to India but applies globally.
While other competitors are trying to enter the mid-size motorcycle market in India, Royal Enfield is an old player with an established fan base.
Latest Enfield offerings:
The latest Royal Enfield motorcycle to hit markets is the Classic 350 and Classic 500. New updates include rear disc brake and a new swingarm among other functionalities. These bikes are also available in all new colour schemes such as the gunmetal grey for the Classic 350 and Stealth Black for the 500.
