About Samsung Omnia
Samsung Electronics is the manufacturer of the Omnia series. These are mainly touchscreen-based smartphones that run on Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7, Android, and even Symbian operating systems.
History of Samsung Omnia series
Samsung launched the first phone in the series, the Omnia I in 2008. It did very well in the US GSM market. Due to its success, more Omnia models were produced.
In 2010, the first Windows Phone smartphone (Omnia 7) was launched. Two other models were launched later, of which, the last was the Samsung Omnia M.
Popularity in India
Samsung has long been associated with mobile phone models in India. The company has also dominated the Indian smartphone market after the fall of Nokia. The Omnia series were among the first Windows-based devices and found fairly less takers. Although these smartphones provide great functionality, they weren’t particularly very popular among the Indian masses.
Design of Samsung Omnia series
The Samsung Omnia series of phones are elegantly-designed smartphones. The handsets feature a solid build quality, but are also lightweight and compact. Holding these phones in the hand gives a comfortable feeling with a light grip. The Omnia phones are about its touchscreen (except certain Omnia Pro models that came with QWERTY keypads). They come with a minimum 3-inch (lesser for the QWERTY models) AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic LED) display and WQVGA screen resolution that offers sharp and bright colours.
In addition, the screens of the last three Omnia phones came with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Certain models have QWERTY keyboard, a transcriber and block recognizer for inputting text. These methods can be used in landscape and portrait modes as well. Despite being touch-based phones, there are a few tactile buttons onboard them. The four-mode direction pad in these phones can be utilized as a virtual mouse as well.
Features of Samsung Omnia series
The Samsung Omnia series are powered by well-known processors and offer varying sizes of RAM. Most of the handsets run on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system. A few phones also run on Symbian and Android. The Omnia phones use Samsung’s TouchWiz UI that permits an additional personalization options. These devices are available with a minimum 4/8/16GB of internal flash memory. Also, they can be further expanded to 32GB via a micro-SD card.
The handsets are equipped with a rear camera which shoots pictures of varying resolutions. Some models also feature a front shooter. Besides digital zoom and video recording abilities, you also get a LED flash, face detection and auto focus features in most of the Omnia phones. With some Omnia models, you can take videos in four different resolutions. These consists of MMS friendly 176x144 and HD 720x480, 640x480, 320x240 resolutions at 30fps. Slow motion recording facility is also available.
These phone even feature powerful business toll. You can stay connected with the office by the push email facility regardless of your location. For entertainment, these Omnia phones offer a media player support for MP3, MP4, WMA, enhanced AAC+ formats and FM radio. Compatible video formats are Xvid and DivX.
The Omnia series are HSPA (3G) capable, you can make use of EDGE, WAP or Internet Explorer, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and micro USB for connectivity. A few models come with innovations like TV-out and document viewer.. Battery life is consistent, with up to 6.5 hours talk time and a standby time of up to 450 hours.
Samsung has created a new version of its Tizen OS, this new OS is said to be used on the upcoming Samsung Z3 Tizen Phone. Official specs and announcement is yet to be heard.
