About Sony Vaio

Sony Vaio

Vaio, which stood for Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer, are a series of laptops computers that were manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan. However, at present, the notebook and desktop lineups have been pretty much discontinued, although support for devices is still available. Vaio Corporation oversees the brand at present.

History of Vaio series

The Vaio brand was introduced by Sony back in 1996 during the release of the PVC series desktop computers. These happened to be a great hit among the masses. Over time, Sony expanded the Vaio lineup, having introduced plenty of innovations in terms of design and functionality. The Vaio notebooks were also pretty popular.

However, due to declining PC sales, that has been the norm for quite some time in the global PC market, Sony sold its PC business to Japan Industrial Partners. This deal went through in July 2014. Although, there are no supplies of PCs at the moment (except in Japan), Vaio does have plans to re-enter international markets soon.

Popularity in India

Sony is a very reputable brand in the Indian electronics market, and when the Vaio notebooks were introduced in the country, they found plenty of takers.

The Vaio series also stood out, particularly due to its attractive appearance, great hardware configuration and after sales service. Also, the availability of these devices across a range of price segments, from lower midrange to premium, made them very popular.

Design of Vaio series

The Vaio series of notebooks have received plenty of kudos for its amazing design. These notebooks are constructed out of carbon fiber material that makes them strong and lightweight at the same time. Depending on the device in question, they weigh up to a maximum of 3 kilograms.

The lid often comes in a matte type finish that features patterns on them. The Vaio branding appears on the center of the lid. On the chassis rests a full-sized keyboard (often backlit) and a trackpad with gesture-based controls. The keys are spacious allowing a good typing experience.

Available screen size are from 8 to 16 inches and happens to be an IPS LED backlit display with HD or higher resolutions. As a result, you can experience great graphics and that from a wide number of angles.

The Vaio series of notebooks come in multitude of color options that make them look very attractive. Some of such colors are black, white, pink, red, yellow, green and brown.

Features of Vaio series

Vaio notebooks come with Intel and AMD processors, although the former is a lot more popular among buyers. In the AMD lineup, they have Fusion or Dual-Core processors. When it comes to Intel powered Vaio devices, they make use of Celeron, Atom, Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, and the latest Core i3/i5/i7 processors. Many of the devices also feature an additional discrete graphics memory that offers smoother graphics performance.

Depending on the model, primary memory ranges from 512MB up to 8GB. Storage in the other hand comes from 20GB to 1TB of space by means of a SATA HDD.

Vaio series of notebooks come with a number of connectivity features, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WLAN, USB, card slot, HDMI, VGA ports, you also get an audio jack that offers headphone connectivity. A DVD-RW drive, and Blu-Ray burner for certain models can also be found. Stereo speakers (with Realtek and Dolby sound) and Mic are available as well.

Multi-cell Li-Ion batteries powers the Vaio laptops and provides a usage time of anything between 3 to 6 hours.

Vaio News

As of now, Vaio does not have any new lineups that are available. Only in Japan does it sell certain devices. However, the company does plan to enter international markets in October 2015 with the release of the Canvas Z tablet.
