Nikon’s foundation dates back to the year 1917, when it formed by a merger of three optical makers. The company then started make lenses for cameras, microscopes, binoculars and other similar instruments. Nikon’s first camera, names as the Nikon I, was released in the year 1948 and by 50s/60s; the maker’s cameras were competing well against the likes of western brands Leica and Zeiss. Through the years, the company also added several innovative features to its line of SLR cameras that were later adopted by other makers.
The first of DLSLRs were made in 1991 for NASA and then later in 1999, the company made its first consumer release. Since then the company has gone on to release several models, including a pint and shoot line called Coolpix.

Nikon puts a lot of focus on the design aspects of its cameras. They are exclusively designed to suit the needs of the market. These cameras are largely made of polycarbonate for the most part and also metal. They are known to be pretty light and can be easily carried around.
The front portion of these cameras has the lens in the compact models. For the DSLR models, there is space for mounting the lens of choice. The flash also rests on the front face, and can be found in the side or the slightly above. The back portion has an LCD screen, usually about 3 inches in size, for the compact and DSLR models. For the DSLR’s, there is also a viewfinder that is present.
There are many color options for Nikon’s camera models.
