About Opel Cars

German automakers helped shaping the history of modern cars with Opel cars playing a prime catalyst to that endeavor. A 155 year old car manufacturing company, they have gone through a fair share of ups and downs. Even today, it continues conducting business across multiple nations. These Bavarians are thinking big for India.

Opel Cars: Automotive Brand Spanning Across Centuries:

Opel is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers. It was founded in Germany; but over the years it expanded operations to numerous developed and developing economies. Opel cars are a mainstay amongst consumer markets. Today, its functions span across major countries like U.S.A, China, India and a host of European nations.

A Brief Walk Down Memory Lane:

Going by history books, Adam Opel, a German businessman founded Opel in 1862. During its formative years, the business produced sewing machines in Russelsheim, Germany. Opel's sewing machine ventures brought in handsome profits. So, he expanded operations and started producing high-wheel motorcycles.

Opel launched its first car in 1899. This initiative involved a partnership between Opel's sons and an eminent locksmith. As the years went by, they grew steadily, starting their mass production in 1920. Early successful models like 'Regent", established Opel as a major German car manufacturer.

Ensuing passenger cars like the Admiral and Kapitan made Opel cars the pioneers of German car businesses. This steady progress was stunted during and after World War II. Gradually it found its way back as a successful subsidiary of General Motors in Europe. Since 1999 though, Opel's revenues have fallen steadily and in 2017, GM sold it to Groupe PSA.

Official Dealerships and Outlets:

Opel is a global brand and hence it reaches across all continents. It has official ventures in North America, Japan, South Africa, Singapore and China. Although sales-wise, Europe continue to be their primary market.

In India, Opel started operations as Opel India Private Ltd., a part of General Motors India Private Ltd. Till 2006; they offered 3 main models across major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, etc. including the Astra, Vectra and Corsa.

Pop culture status

For a company which is more than 150 years old; Opel is a company steeped in history. Although it is not as powerful as it used to be, Opel is a car brand which supplies its buyers with quality products.

The German automaker is still active in European markets; where it often outsells its competitors like Vauxhall, etc. In fact, their Astra K was the European car of the year in 2016. In North America, GM produces rebranded Opel models under its Buick and Saturn series.

Probable Future Prospects in India:

Estimates show that Opel had almost 80 service dealerships in almost 65 different Indian cities. Today, the company provides maintenance services to existing Opel customers. It had a manufacturing plant in Hanol, Gujarat; but GM changed it to Chevrolet India's manufacturing hub.

One can expect Opel cars to continue production under their new ownership. Major future prospects include state-of-the-art R&D centers across Europe and maybe Asian countries like India, China, Singapore, etc. Other ventures will definitely include participating in motorsport with its latest Adam S model.
