Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 launches in China, India launch is also confirmed
After having been the magnet of leaks in the last few weeks, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has now been unveiled in Beijing showing off an improved bezel-less design than its predecessor Mi MIX. The Mi MIX 2 comes with a 5.99-inch full HD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The bottom bezel has shrunk by 12% and overall it is 11.9% smaller to the previous Mi MIX. The internal includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB internal storage. An all-ceramic Special Edition model with 8GB RAM will follow in November.
Right on schedule, Xiaomi had taken the wraps off the much anticipated Mi MIX 2 at an event held in Beijing, China. The smartphone is the successor to the bezel-less smartphone's trendsetter, the Mi MIX, launched in October last year.
Surprisingly, the successor comes with a smaller display, dropping from 6.4-inch to a 5.99-inch display. However, the smartphone comes with a taller screen-to-body ratio and the display now has an 18:9 aspect ratio. The bottom chin is 12% shorter than the previous model. Overall, the Mi MIX 2 is 11.9% smaller than its predecessor at the same time 7% smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus. The traditional angular design is replaced with curved sides. The device combines the aluminum frames with a ceramic unibody design. However, the Special Edition of Mi MIX 2 makes use of complete ceramic. While the regular Mi MIX 2 comes in Black color the Special Edition Mi MIX 2 is dressed in Black and White color options.
Speaking about the specs, the Mi MIX 2 flaunts a 5.99-inch full HD 1080p display and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC clocked at 2.45GHz. The smartphone has 6GB RAM and it comes in three storage bundles: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The Special Edition is, however, laced with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
In the photography front, the Mi MIX 2 sports a single camera of 12MP resolution on the back. The rear camera boasts of Sony IMX386 sensor, 4-axis OIS, dual LED flash, facial recognition and 4K video recording capability. On the other hand, up front, it tacks on a 5MP autofocus selfie camera with the facial recognition feature and full HD video recording capability.
For the software, the Mi MIX 2 boots Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 custom skin running atop. A 3,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 keeps the smartphone ticking. The handset supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C. Xiaomi has skipped the traditional 3.5mm jack with Mi MIX 2. The fingerprint sensor is situated at the back below the camera unit.
The smartphone will hit the shelves starting September 15 while the Special Edition will be rolled out in November with a cost of 4,699 Yuan (Approx. Rs.46,000). On the other hand, the regular version of Mi MIX 2 is priced at 3,299 Yuan (Approx. Rs. 32,300) for the 64GB model, CNY 3,599 (Approx. Rs. 35,300) for the 128GB model and CNY 3,999 (Approx. Rs. 39,200) for the 256GB model.
The predecessor, Mi MIX, never moved out of China's frontiers perhaps because it was produced in limited quantity. However, for the Mi MIX 2 indication is that this time around it will be mass produced, brightening its prospect of launching in other markets, although confirmation in this regard is awaited.
Manu Kumar Jain, the MD of Xiaomi India, has taken to twitter to announce that the Mi MIX 2 will also ship to India soon. But he didn't let slip the exact date for it. We presume it to be happening sooner than expected considering the upcoming festive season in India. Releasing the Mi MIX 2 amidst the celebratory atmosphere in the country where it already enjoys a mammoth fan following will certainly be a smart strategy for ensuring the success of the device. Hope the company thinks the same.
