Alleged unlocked version of Galaxy S8 Active receives Wi-Fi certification
A month after the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active was launched in the US as an AT&T exclusive, a purported unlocked version of the device with a model number SM-G892U has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance signaling that the new variant is also on its way. Expectedly, it will first launch in the US and might see the light elsewhere in the near future. So far, the Seoul-based firm has remained tight-lipped about the development.
Ever since the launch of the Galaxy S5 Active, the Active-branded Galaxy S series phones have launched as AT&T exclusive in the US. But it seems that this trend is set to change from this year as an alleged unlocked version of the device has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA).
Although the WFA doesn't explicitly mention the name of the handset, the listed model number has done the tricks for us. The model number SM-G892U spotted on the WFA's online database corresponds to the model number SM-G892A, which was for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active launched in August as an exclusive offering via AT&T.
The "U" letter at the end of the model number gives us a robust clue that most probably the WFA certified device is going to be the unlocked variant of the Galaxy S8 Active. The possibility also seems ensuing, because at the time of announcing the Galaxy S8 Active, AT&T slipped the information that the exclusivity clause might stay with it for a limited period of time.
For the uninitiated, the Active-branded Galaxy S series is intended for users who prefer the premium phone with military-grade protection from drops, falls as well as water. To serve that purpose the Galaxy S8 Active launched with military grade MIL-STD-810G and IP68 ratings last month.
Furthermore, it came with rounded corners and a flat screen instead of the curved display of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Wrapped in a polycarbonate shell, the Galaxy S8 Active also houses a bigger 4,000mAh battery compared to the 3,000mAh battery found in the Galaxy S8 and S8+.
The rest of the specs are identical, which include a 5.8-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 layered on top. Powering it is the same octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB RAM and 64GB default storage. It also goes with the 12MP/8MP camera configuration from the original Galaxy S8 and S8+.
Back to the alleged unlocked version of the Galaxy S8 Active, its launch date in the US is unknown. But we presume that it will see the light soon. Since the handset in question is seemingly an unlocked version, we also see a possibility of it moving to other markets in the future. But we can't say it for sure. Hopefully, more info in this regard will come up shortly.
