The Handycam series of camcorders are marketed by Sony and are primarily meant to capture high quality video. Handycams cater to different market categories, from consumer-oriented models to professional TV camcorders.

History of Sony Handycam

The Handycam series was on introduced to replace the earlier line of Betamax camcorders from Sony. The first model was introduced in 1985 and supported the Video8 format. Sony then kept releasing newer models in the series and eventually launched the Digital8 format.

The latest Handycam models supports format like NEX-VG900, HDV, DVD, and HDD. There is also a line of models that capture 4K videos.

Popularity in India

When it comes to the camcorder market in India, Sony, Canon and Nikon are the primary market leaders. These devices are largely available throughout the country and are the obvious choice for many consumers. Besides offering high-end camera models, they also offer consumer-oriented affordable models. Handycam series camcorders are pretty common and can be spotted at relevant occasions. Sony’s after also service is also something that attracts plenty of buyers.

Design of Sony Handycam

The Sony Handycam is essentially designed in a compact manner that allows its use by a single hand. Most of the models are based on a horizontal design face, with a few being vertical. The construction of the body is mostly plastic and metal brushings can be found in places. Various color options can also be selected.

The lens sits on the front face, and in some models one can use interchangeable lenses. There is an LCD panel that flips out and can be restored into the body when the camcorder is not in use. The panel can also be swiveled by 360 degrees for viewing purposes. The control buttons lie on the side that houses the LCD panel. There are slots for battery and storage cards.

Features of Sony Handycam

Sony Handycams offer some of the latest features that make shooting videos incredibly amazing. Handycams use Carl Zeiss or Sony G lenses that allow the capture of high-quality and detailed images. The Exmor R CMOS sensor is used for image creation and they are processed by the Bionz processor. This assures outstanding image quality.

The Handycam models also offer recording of full HD videos, i.e. 1920x1800, which is way better than the HD standard. Also, the images are vibrant in terms of both, colors and quality.

A

built-in projector accompanies the Handycam models, which allows you to project a 100cm (diagonal) video from a 5 meter distance. The projector is built into the LCD and packs up as a mini theater on the go.

A new Extended Zoom feature allows you to carry out digital zooming without degradation in the physical quality of the video. This allows a better shooting range for you.

Sound on the Handycams has also improved largely; with support for Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The sound quality is also enhanced by means of Wind Noise Reduction, Zoom Microphone, Clear Phase stereo audio speakers and S-Master amplifier.

Besides these, a handful other features such as Auto Backlight Correction, D-Range Optimizer, Dual Recording, Quick Autofocus, Face Detection, Optical SteadyShot and Wide Angle Capture are present to enhance your videos and images.

Connectivity is available in the form of USB and micro HDMI. Storage capacity varies and comes in the form of Memory Stick, SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and flash storage.

These device are accompanied by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that provides ample amount of usage.
