About Microsoft Surface
Microsoft Surface is a line-up of tablets running on Windows based operating system, and is developed by software giant Microsoft Corporation. Although the iPad and Android-based tablets are better off among consumers, many people have also opted for these Surface tablets as it offers plenty of functionalities.
History of Microsoft Surface series
Microsoft had been trying to popularise its tablets for a pretty long time, particularly because Apple and other Android devices held most of the market share.
Microsoft initially revealed the Surface tablet at a conference in California, way back in 2007. However, it was only in June 2012 that they launched the Microsoft Surface series of tablet computers. The Surface Pro tablet targeted the business class users and the Surface tablet was meant for regular home users.
A little over a year later in October, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets were released as successors to the initial releases. This was followed by the release of the Surface Pro 3 in June 2014 and the Surface 3 in May 2015.
Popularity in India
People yearn for tablets since they allow people to carry out a wide variety of tasks. However, there are only a few tablets that can possibly do everything a modern day user requires in general. However, the Surface and Surface Pro tablets come close, as everything can be done in a hybrid laptop and tablet mode.
Microsoft must be given due recognition for competing with leaders in the tablet market, such as the iPad and Google Nexus line-ups. Microsoft’s Surface tablets have become popular and can compete with the iPad and Galaxy Tab for market share in India.
Design of Microsoft Surface series
With the Surface series of tablets, you get a well designed and sturdy device. They are sleek, light, durable and beautiful in appearance. The vapour matte casing acts as a protective shield while providing a high quality finish. Moreover, its feels light in your hand and not too heavy. These tablets have a metallic back casing that is of high quality material. On the whole, the quality of the build is pretty good.
The back has a little flipped-out stand that allows you to place the tablet down. With backlit facility, they are perfect for typing in all lighting conditions. Moreover, you can also fold the keyboard just like a laptop. An active pen may also be used. In addition, with a kind of magnetic clip, you can remove the keyboard and use it like a tablet.
The look and feel of the FHD capacitive multi-touch display screen is good, which comes in 10.4 inches and above. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass protection too. There are also numerous colour options available.
Features of Microsoft Surface series
The Microsoft Surface tablets are powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra and Intel processors backed with 2/4GB of RAM. The internal memory is available in many variants, such as 32/64/128/256/512GB. The storage can be further expanded through a micro-SD card.
The Microsoft Surface tablets have dual cameras. The rear facing camera is 8 and 5 MP for the latest Surface and Surface Pro models. They are angled to easily capture every important moment. The front facing camera can be used for video calling and image capturing selfie photos.
Barring the Surface and Surface 2, which run on Windows RT, other devices in the line-up run on Windows 8.1 and are upgradeable to Windows 10 at present.
The connectivity options offered are through 3G/4G (some releases), Bluetooth, WI-Fi, Mini DisplayPort and a USB port. Moreover, the Surface tablets do come with an ambient light sensor, an accelerometer, a compass and a gyroscope.
These devices offer a large battery life, which means less time in charging and more time for work.
It is believed that Microsoft will release the Surface Pro 4 within the upcoming months. The device is also set to feature a wide range of upgrades.
