Sharp's bezel-less smartphone leaked in image just ahead of launch

Sharp is at it again. After launching one of the earliest bezel-less devices in Sharp AQUOS Crystal the Japanese manufacturer is slated to lift the veil from the two bezel-less devices on July 17. An image purportedly of one of these handsets is leaked showing the curved top and a selfie shooter cut-out straight in the top middle of the front glass panel. The two devices are expected to flaunt the same set of specs except for the chipset.

The bezel-less smartphone desgin seems to be the latest craze in the smartphone world today. However, well before every smartphone manufacturer started to produce their own bezel-less design, Sharp had already offered one of the earliest near bezel-less smartphones, the Sharp AQUOS Crystal, back in 2014. Once again the Japanese manufacturer is prepping to unveil a pair of bezel-less display smartphones duo, slated to be shown in public on July 17.

As days close by to the unveiling, an image belonging to one of the two smartphones has drifted over the internet giving away what the new bezel-less smartphones from Sharp might look like, although we are not sure if both the handsets will at all look alike.

The image is in the form a teaser revealing the curved top of the display. The frame that has been used for the teaser does remind us about the Essential Phone teaser that Android co-founder Andy Rubin used earlier. And to some extent, the upcoming Sharp bezel-less device resembles the Essential Phone. The most notable likeness is in the selfie camera which shows a cut out right into the top middle of the display similar to the Essential Phone.

Although the image doesn't show any part of the device except for the top, it seems the device will have an edge-to-edge display. The image shows off a white metal frame running around. As per the source of the leak, the smartphone shown in the image features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as well.

The two smartphones will bear the model numbers FS88010 and FS8016 and will be equipped with the same specs only differing in the area of the processor. While the FS88010 model will be powered by Snapdragon 660 SoC the FS8016 will integrate Snapdragon 630 SoC.

Regarding the rest of the specs, both are expected to pack a 5.5-inch full HD 1080p display, 4GB or 6GB RAM, 64GB internal storage. For the optics, they will tack on dual 12MP rear cameras along with an 8MP selfie shooter at the front. Android 7.1.1 Nougat will handle the software department for both the handsets.

All said and done, vouching for the veracity of the leak is difficult, so we advise our readers not be taken in by it completely. The details in this regard will anyway be out in the public domain on July 17 when the handset duo will finally launch. But what could be a dampener here is the fact that Sharp products largely end up being confined to Japan only.
