About Motorola Razr
Cell phones under the Razr series were manufactured by Motorola, Inc. which was one of the leading telecommunications companies in the world. However, after being affected by a series of losses, the company was split into two separate units, that being Mobility and Solutions.
Motorola Mobility, which was acquired by Google in 2011, and then sold to Lenovo in 2014, presently handles the mobile handset division.
History of the Razr series
The Razr lineup’s first phone made foray into the market in 2004, with the Razr V3. Not only was the model known for its exclusive looks, but it was also largely popular among customers. It even went on to sell as many as 50 million units between 2004 and 2006. It was also released under numerous improved variants, such as the V3i, V3x and more. Then came the Razr maxx, which was also essentially an improvement over the V3.
The Razr2 series also made way after and had four models that were released. However, with declining sales of the series, Motorola finally scrapped the worldwide release of Razr3. However, in 2011, Motorola re-launched the series with Android OS powering the models. These phones are also known by the same name and maintain its trademark qualities that initially made it a popular line.
Popularity in India
The Razr series was pretty popular in India back in the days when Nokia phones were market leaders in the Indian phone segments. Many of the people found Motorola to be a trusted and quality brand and thus, Motorola found many takers for its numerous models such as the Razr, Rokr and SLVR L lineups.
However, with touchscreen-based smartphones making their foray into the country, Motorola lost much of its sheen, and pretty much went out of market for quite some time. It then returned to Indian markets with a number of Android-based devices that have found a sizeable number of takers again.
Design of the Razr series
The Razr series of phones initially came with a thin appearance and stylish looks. In fact, at that time, these phones were some of the thinnest of the lot of clamshell type sets that were available.
The new lineup of Razr phones, although touchscreen-based, maintains the key feature of the series, i.e. the thinness. The phones in the series come with a 4.3 inch capacitive screens that have qHD resolutions and also feature an AMOLED technology. Gorilla Glass is also something that comes with the phones to ensure they survive minute shocks and scratches. Black and silver are the usual colors that are available for the phone.
Features of the Razr series
Two of Razr phones run on Android versions 2.3 (Razr Maxx and XT910). The latest release in the series, the Razr I XT890 runs on version 4.0 (upgradeable to 4.1). They are powered by a 1.2/2GHz OMAP/Intel Atom processor and also feature a GPU. The RAM that is available on these phones is 1GB, which is pretty much enough for daily usage. The phones generally come with 8/16 GB of storage, which can be further expanded.
Basic functions on these phones, such as calling, messaging and Internet surfing are flawless. The phones feature rear cameras that are usually of 8MP. There is also the presence of LED flash for images under poor lighting conditions. The front camera, present in the Razr series phones, can be used for video calling.
Aside from these, the phones in the series come with a host of connectivity options. They support 2G and 3G networks, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI and USB. Then there are a number of basic sensors that are present in the Razr phones. With enough juice from the batteries, Razr phones also provide ample amount of talk time and standby time.
Motorola has stated that the Moto G second and third generation phones are set to receive Android 5.1.1 updates soon. A similar update for the Moto E variant is also under testing process.
