About Nokia Lumia
Prior to Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia in 2014, the Lumia series of smartphones were manufactured by the Finnish global telecommunication giants Nokia. These smartphones ran on Windows Mobile OS and were pretty popular as well.
History of Nokia Lumia
Nokia was once the largest mobile phone vendor in the world with many of its phones running on the vastly popular Symbian OS. However, with the rise of other platforms such as iOS and Android, Symbian lost its flavor with the masses and the landscape began to change. Other brands eventually took over the market, mainly the iPhones and other Android makers such as Samsung and HTC.
Finally, in 2011, Nokia entered into a partnership with Microsoft, and released the Lumia series that was based on the Windows platform by the latter. Since then, quite a number of Nokia Lumia models have been released and they enjoy a small share of the global smartphone market. Presently though, the Lumia series has been renamed as Microsoft Lumia after the software giant’s takeover in 2014.
Popularity in India
The Indian mobile phone market was a treasure trove for Nokia, especially with its budget and Symbian offerings. However, that certainly changed when Android devices started to take over the market. When the first Nokia Lumia was launched in the country, there wasn’t a lot of fanfare. However, over the past couple of years, things certainly started looking up for the brand. At present, the Lumia series has found a number of people who look towards using Windows as a platform. These phones are Lumia 620, 520, 625, 720 and 830.
Design of the Nokia Lumia series
All of the Lumia phones are touchscreen-based smartphones (some being tablets) and feature a rectangular slate form factor. The phones although made from plastic and polycarbonate material, sport good looks and build quality. The screen is usually capacitive in nature and has TFT/IPS LCD technology. Higher priced devices are also known to sport HD and FHD display resolutions.
Besides these, Nokia Lumia phones come in many different colors, many of which are tangy and stand out among the usual crowd.
Features of Nokia Lumia
Nokia Lumia phones and tablets are usually powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon/Krait processors that also have the additional Adreno GPU. RAM capacity come with either 512MB, 1GB or 2GB of RAM depending on the model, They also have internal memory storage of 8/16GB, differing between models. However, the 8GB models are more profound. Additional memory option is also available for this series of phones and can be expanded with an extra micro-SD card.
All Nokia Lumia phones run on Windows Mobile OS. The earlier models ran on version 7.5 (Mango) while the later versions come with Windows 8. Many of the Windows 8 phones are also upgradable to the 8.1 version, and a few are poised to receive Windows 10 update as well. Although phones come with certain in-built apps, a number of other utility apps can be easily downloaded from the Windows Store, which is growing over time.
Phones in the Nokia Lumia series are also known to sport very good quality cameras (many models have PureView technology). These usually range between 5MP and 20MP (many models feature 6.7MP cameras). Lumia phones also have LED flash and a front camera as well.
Lumia phones come with regular connectivity options like 2G, 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. On deck sensors are also available to assist activities in many ways. Battery usually ranges between 1300mAh and 2420mAh with the expensive models featuring Qi wireless charging feature.
Microsoft recently released a list of 10 Lumia devices that will be getting the Windows 10 update. The company also revealed that Lumia devices with Denim update will eventually get Windows 10.
