Sony Mobile Communications Inc. is basically a mobile electronic device manufacturer that has its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan and Sweden. While earlier devices were released under the Sony Ericsson branding, they were changed to Sony following the company’s full acquirement of stakes in the joint venture.
History of Sony Mobile Phones
Sony has always been a very strong player in the mobile device industry. Sony Ericsson was formed back in the new millennium, when Ericsson joined hands with Sony to hold its mobile business from crumbling. The company released a flurry of handsets over the decade, most notably its Walkman series of phones. The phones were also noted for many multimedia features, such a good camera, music players, Bluetooth, FM radio and more. However, despite their popularity, the venture continued to make massive losses and reached a very low point.
The Symbian operating system was fairly trounced with the likes of new players such as iOS and Android. This also resulted in Sony moving onto the Android platform starting with the Xperia X10 in 2010. Other releases followed while the company also completed the full acquisition of Ericsson’s stakes by 2012. The company then renamed itself and started focusing on just the smartphone market. The company’s flagship devices, i.e. the Xperia Z devices are pretty popular at present.
Design of Sony Mobile Phones
Sony has always been great with the designs of its smartphones right from the start. Most of the earlier phones were featured phones that came with small screens, keypads, QWERTY, clamshell and slider form factors.
The Xperia models, however, have been touchscreen smartphones, mostly running Android versions over the years. Screen sizes largely vary and a whole range of devices are available that offer choice to customers. Resolutions in these devices also vary, with the most common options being qHD, FHD, HD, FWVGA, and more. Also, the screens come with IPS LCD technology and offer Gorilla Glass for most models.
The phones are usually light and high-end models feature a lot of metal construction. For lower end devices, the make of mostly plastic. Various colors are also available for Sony’s range of devices, although black is the most common one.
Features of Sony Mobile Phones
Sony’s mobile devices offer a rich user experience and are known to offer quality features. It makesusing the best available chips to power its devices and that is mostly Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. Alongside, they have ample amounts of RAM ranging from 1 to 3GB. Internal storage capacity starts with 4GB and goes up to 32GB. An additional card slot is provided for expansion options.
Sony phones run various versions of the Android operating system, providing updates for most of its prominent devices as well. Sony’s user interface, i.e. Timescape is also worth a mention, despite the presence of some amount of bloatware.
The cameras found in Sony’s handsets are some of the most advanced ones in the mobile photography sphere. Considering that Sony has its very own business in the field, flagships and other high-end models are equipped with shooters with the very latest technology. Camera resolution, as high as 23MP for the rear and 13MP for the front, can be found on these devices. They even come with other features such as backlighting, LED flash and others.
When it comes to connectivity, Sony’s mobiles support wireless features in the form of WLAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, MHL, GPS and cellular connectivity. With regards to cellular technology, 3G and 4G LTE bands are supported. USB/OTG is also supported. The latest Xperia Z also boasts of having g a fingerprint sensor.
