About Microsoft Mobile Phones
Microsoft Mobile Phones
Microsoft Mobile, which is basically a subsidiary of software giant Microsoft Corp. is mobile phone manufacturer, with its headquarters in Finland. The company was formed after Microsoft acquired Nokia, another global mobile device manufacturer.
History of Microsoft Mobile Phones
Microsoft was originally in a deal with Nokia and provided Windows OS to the Lumia line of smartphones that were manufactured by the latter. However, the Finnish company was acquired in 2014. While Microsoft continued to use and support the Nokia Lumia devices released prior to the acquisition, the company later started to rebrand much of its devices from the end of 2014.
The first device with the Microsoft branding was the Lumia 535, which was released in November 2014. The following year Microsoft launched several other Lumia devices. The latest devices announced by Microsoft are the Lumia 950/XL and 550.
Popularity in India
India had always been a very favorable market for Nokia. The company’s devices were always received with a lot interest. However, Nokia did experience a low with the advent of numerous other mobile platforms. The Lumia devices, which were released to offer a smartphone alternative to iPhones and Android devices, were also favorable among Indian buyers.
Even after Microsoft has taken over the company, India still happens to be a very favorable market. The devices are largely in demand for their quality and affordability. Feature phones with the Nokia branding still sell in the Indian market and are meant for low-end customers.
Design of Microsoft Mobile Phones
Microsoft’s Lumia devices are pretty well-designed in all aspects. The construction is usually a mix of plastic and metal. The rear surface is often glossy and can be an issue when holding. However, a number of options are available, as they feature trendy color options to choose from. The devices although not completely light, aren’t all too heavy either.
The screen is usually one with an IPS/OLED LCD and multi-touch support. The resolution varies and the premium phones in the lineup have HD/FHD displays. Corning Gorilla Glass support is also available in a vast majority of the phones.
Features of Microsoft Mobile Phones
Microsoft’s mobile devices come packed with many features. To start with, they feature modern system-on-chips, mostly from the likes of manufacturers like Qualcomm. They also add up well in terms of memory. This largely ranges between 512MB to 3GB. Storage options are also sufficient and go right up to 32GB. Memory card slots are also provided by these devices.
All Microsoft devices run on Windows Phones operating system. The versions vary, although most are upgradeable to Windows 10. The Windows Store also has a large array of apps that can be used to enhance a phone’s functionalities.
Front and rear cameras provided on these mobiles offer very good shots and videos. Resolutions largely differ and the higher-priced models have better resolutions. Some even come with PureView technology. In addition, other features such as LED flash, auto-focus, panorama, and others are available.
These phones also offer many connectivity options. The most likely ones are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, cellular SIM support and GPS. For cellular connectivity, these phones support 3G/4G bands.
The battery on Lumia phones is fairly commendable. Li-ion batteries are mostly used in these devices and they offer good backup times as well.
Microsoft Mobile News
Microsoft recently launched the Lumia 550 in Indian markets. This budget 4G LTE device also happens to be the cheapest in the lineup to run Windows 10 out of the box. The device is also available in white and black color variants.
