Lenovo Group Ltd., despite being a company that mainly focuses on the computer business, has recently started to exploit the smartphone market segment as well. And even though it's a fairly young player, compared to most of its counterparts, the company has gone on to develop a good market, mainly in several Asian countries.
History of Lenovo Mobiles
Lenovo’s tryst with mobile phones were largely featured phones of the A series. These were mainly released around 2011-12. It also made a few Android devices around the same time, all of them mostly running Android 2.3, i.e. Gingerbread.
Lenovo’s mainstream entry started with the release of Android mobiles around the end of 2012. Most of these phones belonged to the A, P and S series, which continues till date. The company has also launched a number of other notable devices, such as the Vibe X and Z phones, Note 8, K3 Note, and of late the Vibe P1 and Shot models. Besides this, it also acquired Motorola Mobility in 2014 from Google.
Popularity in India
Even though Lenovo didn’t have a good presence in India’s mobile phone market, the company has done very well to expand its reach, especially in the past two years or so. The company has a fair share, about 6.5 percent in the present market that consists of many top brands and low cost players. Also, the company has launched many phones that offer 4G LTE capabilities and has about 30 percent market share in that segment.
Lenovo mostly sells its phones by means of flash sale on popular online retail sites, most notably Flipkart. The company has launched some very impressive models, all between the low cost and mid-range category.
Design of Lenovo Phones
A majority of Lenovo’s phones come with a polycarbonate build, although certain devices do have a full metal construction. The polycarbonate builds also have very light weight, which makes the phone easy to operate on holding.
Phones largely have a slate form factor and come with varying screen sizes. However, most recent models are all above 4inches. The technology used in screen construction is IPS LCD. Many of the phones boast of having HD/FHD displays of the highest quality. Three capacitive buttons are located just below the screen.
The back cover is removable and comes with a matte type finish. They have a Lenovo branding too. For availability of colors, it basically depends on the specific models that one is buying.
Features of Lenovo Mobiles
Lenovo offers some of the most affordable phones in the world along with premium features. The phones are powered by Snapdragon or MediaTek chipsets and offer great computing power. They are also largely equipped with RAM of 1GB or higher. Storage is available as flash memory and that is usually between 4 and 32GB. One can also use the expansion slot to increase storage.
The phones are equipped with cameras that offer better shots in well lighted conditions. Both front and back cameras are provided, and they provide various resolutions.
Lenovo’s phones come with various Android versions and most of the present releases run either KitKat or Lollipop. Many of the phones also receive updates for upgrades and bug fixes. The phones also run Vibe UI, which is very simple, yet elegantly built interface.
For connectivity, Lenovo’s phones offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, GPS and more. Phones also support micro USB and even OTG in some models. SIM connectivity, often dual SIM, is available on these phones and Lenovo has released a huge number of models that offer 4G LTE bands.
Phones are provided with removable Li-ion batteries that offer good backup for daily usage.
