About Dell Mobile Phones

Dell Mobile Phones

Dell Inc. is a one of the world’s largest PC vendors and is mostly associated with the hardware and electronics business pertaining to computing. The company is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas and has its presence in numerous countries worldwide. Dell does have a lineup of tablets and smartphones, commonly known as the Venue series. However, as of today, Dell has discontinued releasing smartphones under the Venue brand and has totally converted it into a tablet only brand. Other phone releases from Dell has been under the names of XCD and Streak.

History of Dell Mobile Phones

Some of Dell’s earliest smartphone releases came in 2009. These were the Mini 3iX and the Mini 3i. These devices ran Android OS 1.5. Dell released another model before it launched the more popular Streak. This device was more of phablet at that time and featured a 5 inch screen.

2010 saw the release of several other models such as the XCD devices and the first Venue smartphone. It had a 4.1 inch screen, which was relatively large at that time. Dell then concentrated on releasing some tablet models under the Venue brand in the follow up years before finally announcing that it was quitting the smartphone business in 2012.

Popularity in India

India has always been a very large market for Dell, mainly with laptops and desktops. However, many of Dell’s smartphone releases had hardly hit Indian markets. In fact, there were probably just a couple of models that were sold in India. These were the Venue, XCD and Streak lines of devices. Even then, these devices weren’t really available widespread in the country.

Therefore, it can be said that Dell wasn’t relatively popular for its smartphones, as it has always been for its computers and PC oriented products.

Design of Dell Mobile Phones

Dell has often tried out various designs concerning its smartphone releases. Most of the phones basically have the slate form factor. Some have extremely round edges and hence feature a somewhat oval shape.

The build material for most phones has been hardened plastic and metal in certain parts. They are relatively bulky, according to some. The screen size varies between various devices and ranges from 2.8 inches to 5 inches. For technology, they make use of TFT LCD or AMOLED displays. Most phones feature various resolutions, although none of them have HD or higher displays.

As for color options, they are mostly available in black and silver.

Features of Dell Mobile Phones

Dell’s phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon and ARM processors. They feature up to 1GB of RAM. Internal memory too in these phones has always been pretty low. About 1GB of maximum storage is provided. However, it is possible to extend memory with the help of an external micro-SD card.

The phones run on Android OS 2.2, i.e. Froyo. This is the maximum version up to which these devices have been upgraded to. Certain phones also run Dell’s very own interface known as the Stage UI.

Dell’s phones mostly have just one camera, i.e. on the rear. Resolution for these cameras also varies across the various models that are present.

Dell mobiles have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, GPS and FM Radio for connectivity. Cellular networks are supported, but the phones do not support 3G networks. They all offer the mini SIM type. Sensors, such as accelerometer, ambient light and proximity are present on most of the phones. The phones are powered by Li-ion batteries that last for long usage hours.

Dell Mobile Phone News

As of now, Dell does not manufacture smartphones anymore. This announcement came in October 2013, when the company decided to quit making smartphones and turn it into a tablet only brand.
