DataWind was founded in 2001 and is based out of Montreal in Canada. The company has primarily been into the development of services and products that aid in web accessibility. In the field, the company had also earned the reputation of having several patents on web-based technologies to its credit.
However, the company also began to delve into the computer hardware market from 2004, with the launch of its first product, the PocketSurfer, which was basically a smartphone cum PDA. It also had good web browsing capabilities. This line has existed since then and DataWind launches iterations to it.
Popularity in India
DataWind is a very popular company in the Indian market. It largely rose to prominence after the Indian Government had awarded it the contract to manufacture low-cost Akash tablets for educational purposes. Since then, the company has been commercially successful as well, marketing its tablet and smartphone range.
PocketSurfer phones, introduced to India in 2013, are mainly available through online platforms. They are priced affordably and come with a rich array of modern day features found in most phones. Also, owing to DataWind’s data compression technology in their phones, these PocketSurfer smartphones can be a good choice for browsing in developing countries such as India.
Design of DataWind Mobile Phones
DataWind’s smartphones are pretty well-designed, although they are available for low prices. The phones are known to have a bar type form factor and have a widely plastic buildup. Hence, they tend to be very light in weight. Also, most phones aren’t really very large, so using them with just one hand is easier. A metal bezel can be found on these phones too.
As for the size of the screen, it largely differs between models. There are two models that have a 5 inch screen, while the others are smaller in size. Also, the technology used is TFT LCD, which is good for viewing.
When it comes to color options, DataWind offers two common colors, black and white.
Features of DataWind Mobile Phones
DataWind’s Mobile devices have an array of features that are generally found in smartphones these days.
They are powered by Cortex A7 processors that are quick at handling regular tasks. Memory provided isn’t very high, mainly owing to price constraints that come into factor. For mostly phones, 512 MB of RAM is the highest so far. Internal flash storage also varies, but the upward limit is of 4 GB.
When it comes to the software that runs on DataWind’s PocketSurfer devices, it is hardly a surprise that Android is the operating system here, considering its adaptability to many types of hardware. The software also comes with the company’s web acceleration and data compression technologies to help save data consumption.
Connectivity is present in the form of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Cellular networks of 2G and 3G are supported till date. In addition, there are 3.5mm headphone jacks and micro-USB ports too.
