About Volvo Cars
Volvo cars hold a very niche segment in the international automobile market. With an inclination towards utilitarian luxury, these models are all about umpteen engineering functions and top-end utility-centric indulgence. Volvo looks to extend its global reach starting with the Indian luxury segment.
Volvo cars expanding their reach in India and beyond:
There are multiple segments of models in the modern automobile industry. Volvo cars fall right in between top-end luxury segments and high-end mass production segment. Their models integrate a utilitarian but suave build quality along with high-end amenities.
The Evolution of Volvo:
Volvo as a brand name bears its trademark in 1911 adhering to a new class of SKF ball bearings. Translating in Latin as 'I Roll,' SKF ball bearings was the first product to bear this brand name.
Automobiles were still a long way from this Swedish brand. But it does take shape in 1924 when SKF salesperson Assar Gabrielsson and engineer Gustav Larson puts their idea of manufacturing a Swedish car into effect.
The Intention was to manufacture an automobile which can endure typically harsh Swedish road and weather conditions. AB Volvo or Aktiebolaget manufactures the first Volvo car in 1927 after 10 prototype models. Production went onto include 280 cars.
But it was their first truck, series 1, which gave Volvo recognition. 1930 saw AB Volvo sell 639 cars along with truck exports throughout Europe. Soon, the production line was to include buses as well.
Volvo Car Corporation takes shape in 1978 separating from the Volvo group as the latter continues to participate in multiple fields of engineering even today. Volvo cars quickly become an important manufacturer in Europe.
They further enter into collaborations with Renault across multiple automotive engineering and R&D pointers only to dissolve it in 1994. Further collaborations also ensure with the likes of Mitsubishi and General Motors.
1999 saw Volvo cars separating from the core group and becoming a part of Ford Motor Company in a deal then worth $6.45 billion. Since 2010, Chinese conglomerate Geely Holding Group owns Volvo automobiles.
Global market reach:
Globally, Volvo directly controls manufacturing plants across Belgium, China, Malaysia other than their base and HQ in Sweden which alone has 5 plants. But their home market does not continue as their largest consumer spectrum. Instead, China has become the largest market with Sweden in second and USA third.
2014 saw Volvo register 10% increase in sales, strong sales figures after a long period of time. Although the manufacturers still continue to function in an investment phase after taking to Chinese ownership, they look to increase their sales officially across affluent upcoming markets such as the Middle-East as well as India.
Volvo, the Brand:
The building block behind this manufacturer lies in endurance and build-quality. Brand Volvo continues to retain its exclusivity on the same aspect. Safety was and continues to be among the most vital USPs of these models with the manufacturers acting as pioneers throughout history in today's default safety features. Volvo was the first automobile manufacturers to integrate 3-point safety belt setup in their models.
Volvo cars in the Indian market:
Safety, build quality and utilitarian luxury, Volvo is a luxury brand with signature style and appeal to Indian buyers. Currently, the Swedes operate 18 dealerships across nearly as many cities. Volvo cars currently constitute 5% of the Indian premium automobile segment. They look to increase it to 10% by 2020 with further investments and more models over their current brochure which has 4 offerings.
